Ahoi Ashtami 2026 will be observed on Sunday, 1 November 2026. Mothers keep a day-long fast for the long life, health and happiness of their children, worship Ahoi Mata in the evening, and break the fast after sighting the first stars. It falls four days after Karva Chauth and about a week before Diwali. Here is the Ahoi Ashtami 2026 date, tithi, puja vidhi, samagri, vrat katha and fasting rules.

What Is Ahoi Ashtami?
Ahoi Ashtami, also called Ahoi Aathe, is observed mainly in North India — Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Haryana, Rajasthan, Punjab and Madhya Pradesh. Mothers pray to Ahoi Mata, a form of Goddess Parvati, for the protection and wellbeing of their children. Traditionally it was kept for sons, but today most families observe it for all their children, and many couples hoping for a child keep it too.
Ahoi Ashtami Puja Samagri
- Picture or wall drawing of Ahoi Mata (often with eight corners, a porcupine or “syahu” and her cubs)
- A kalash or karva filled with water
- Roli, rice, milk, flowers, diya and incense
- Seven blades of grass and wheat grains
- Sweets, puri, halwa and chana as bhog
- A silver Ahoi pendant or “syau mala” (a thread with silver beads), added to each year
Ahoi Ashtami 2026 Puja Vidhi
- Morning: bathe early and take the sankalp (vow) to fast for your children.
- Fast: many mothers keep a nirjala fast (no water); others keep a fruit-and-water fast.
- Prepare the altar: draw or place Ahoi Mata’s image on the wall facing east, with the syahu and its seven cubs.
- Place the kalash with water and a thread (kalava) tied around it.
- Evening puja: offer roli, rice, flowers, sweets and bhog; light a diya.
- Listen to the Ahoi Ashtami katha with grains of wheat in your hand.
- Wear the syau mala blessed in the puja; it is worn until Diwali.
- Star sighting: offer arghya (water) to the stars from the kalash, then break the fast with bhog.
Ahoi Ashtami Vrat Katha
Long ago a woman with seven sons went to the forest to dig soil to plaster her home before Diwali. While digging, her spade accidentally killed a porcupine cub (syahu). Within a year, all seven of her sons died one after another. Heartbroken, she confessed her sin to the elder women of the village, who told her to fast and worship Ahoi Mata on the Ashtami of Kartik and to draw the syahu and its cubs, asking forgiveness. She did so with complete devotion year after year, and Ahoi Mata, pleased with her repentance, blessed her — and her sons were restored to life. Since then, mothers observe Ahoi Ashtami for the protection of their children.
Ahoi Ashtami Fasting Rules
- Avoid digging soil or cutting with sharp tools on the day, in memory of the katha.
- Pregnant women, nursing mothers and anyone with a health condition should keep a light fast or seek medical advice.
- Break the fast only after seeing the stars and completing the arghya.
- Offer food and gifts to the mother-in-law or elder women of the family.
Ahoi Ashtami and Radha Kund Snan
In Braj (Mathura–Govardhan), Ahoi Ashtami night is also known for the holy dip in Radha Kund. Couples wishing for a child take a midnight bath in the kund, a tradition that draws large crowds every year.
